Neurodivergent individuals often bring creativity, innovation, and unique problem-solving abilities to the table. These traits are sometimes overlooked in favour of focusing on the challenges associated with their condition. For example:
A neuroaffirmative approach fosters creativity by allowing individuals to explore and express their strengths without being overly restricted by societal norms. This support not only helps with managing day-to-day challenges but also allows neurodivergent individuals to thrive by tapping into their natural talents. Using creativity as a tool in this is so helpful, especially if focussing on communicating solely by words is tricky. We provide a range of creative ways to communicate and think and process.
Receiving a diagnosis—whether for autism, ADHD, or another neurodivergent trait—can be an incredibly relieving experience. It provides validation, helping individuals understand that their experiences and challenges are not personal failings, but part of their neurological makeup. The sense of clarity and self-understanding that comes with a diagnosis can be transformative. It provides a framework for understanding why certain things may be more difficult for them, which can reduce shame, guilt, or confusion about their struggles.
More importantly, a diagnosis can shift the focus from just surviving—getting through each day, masking symptoms, and trying to fit into a neurotypical world—to thriving—accepting and understanding oneself, building on strengths, and making intentional choices about how to navigate the world. With the right support, neurodivergent individuals can flourish in ways that honour their individuality and allow them to live more fulfilling lives. We see 'diagnosis' more through the lens of 'identification' than labelling through the Medical Model approach with the language of 'disorder' and 'impairment'. Providing a descriptor of neurotype can be so helpful, and can begin a whole new way of understanding ones self.
